Travel

It seems like everyone with an online profile just loves to travel. Far-flung places like Bali, India, or Costa Rica, are no match for the well-seasoned travelers of cyberspace. So it seems at least partly logical that people would be willing to travel for love, right? With all the advances in technology, (skype, webcams, texting, emails), not to mention the increased mobility we now all enjoy, there’s no reason not to consider a long-distance relationship.  Stories abound of couples whose long-distance relationships resulted in commitment.

And since you’re the consummate traveler, why not?

You will, however need to set some rules and regulations.

1. Make sure you are both clear on what the status of your relationship. Are you exclusive or just casually dating? Is either one of you open to moving should the relationship become more serious? What are you looking to get out of the relationship? Awkward line of questioning?Perhaps. But necessary to ask to avoid any miscommunication down the line.

2. Don’t just talk on the phone. Simplychatting on the phone can get boring really quickly. Watch movies or TV “together”. Play a board game. Or make meals together.

3. Communicate! And make sure you do it every day. Since you don’t see each other as much as you might like, it’s important to maintain the emotional connection. It doesn’t have to be a long drawn out conversation every time; it can be about the little things too. Write love letters. Send e-cards, real cards, gifts, and flowers.

4. Take advantage of the pluses of a long-distance relationship. You have more time for yourself and you don’t fight over little things like taking out the trash or socks on the floor. You can maintain your individuality without getting lost in the relationship. You’re also forced to communicate better. Unlike couples who are together all the time, you can’t just rest on your laurels, sitting on the couch while staring at the TV. Visiting each other gives you a reason to travel and explore new and exciting places you may have never even considered before. The excitement is also heightened since you don’t get to see each other that often.

And remember, it won’t be like this forever! If you’re truly in love and happy, the two of you will find a way to work it out.
